Pumpkin Boats and Other Reasons I Love Fall in New England

This weekend was quite the weekend. I had four days off--Monday was a holiday, and I don't teach on Fridays--and I spent those days dashing all over the state to see as many great fall things as I possibly could.

I went apple picking with one of my department-mates and his children. I went hiking along the coast down near Freeport. I went to see the great Pumpkin Regatta in Damariscotta--one of my favorite towns in all of Maine--with a couple other of my department-mates. Everything was colorful, folksy, and crisp. It was beautiful. It was breathtaking. It was filled with giant pumpkins hollowed out to become boats. What could be better?
