Saying Goodbye

On Thursday afternoon I said goodbye to my half-semester-long technical writing class. Instead of having them for three hours a week like a normal class, I had them for three hour stretches twice a week. We crammed a lot of together-time into those six hours a week, and I'm sad to see them go. This week I brought in popcorn, and we sat around and watched everyone give mini-presentations on their final projects. I sat in the back, near my favorite students--a gaggle of auto mechanics who have funny and vaguely sassy mouths--and during a section of time between presentations, one of them leaned over to confess some things.

Student: This class was fun.

Me: Yeah, it was, wasn't it?

Student: I love you.

Me: Aww, that's sweet. Thanks.

Student: I just got a new car over the weekend. Do you want to go for a ride in it?

Me: Uhm...

Student's Friend: She can't go for a ride with you. She's your teacher.

Student: For, like, another hour. So, Jess, what are you teaching next semester? We want to have you again.

Me: Next semester I've got College Writing, Creative Writing, and Tech Writing.

Student: Well, we already took College Writing.

Student's Friend: I didn't like my teacher.

Student: Me neither. We didn't learn anything important in that class. Do you think we can take it again with you?

Me: That doesn't seem very productive.

Student: Well, I guess we're taking Creative Writing then. Dude, how does that sound?

Student's Friend: Creative Writing it is.

Student: So, you really don't want to go for a ride in my new car?

Is student cute?? I'm so jealous!! You get to be ogled by horny cute college boys all day. I get very much not appreciated comments from gray haired men.

Student is sweet and charming and is cute, I suppose, in the way all eighteen year olds who are sweet and charming are. I will miss him and his friends.

It is nice, sometimes, to be so openly loved. :)
